Sunrise is at its latest of the year around the end of June, so the gate opens a good half hour before the sun comes up and you're in the park for the first light. The sun sets about a quarter of an hour before the gates close, which puts the drive home to Marloth Park in the dark. Go slowly, because the animals use the Marloth roads at night.
Holidays in June 2027
- Youth Day is Wednesday 16 June.
- Schools close on Friday 25 June, and the winter school holidays run 26 June to 19 July 2027.
School holidays and long weekends are when the gates most often reach their daily limit for day visitors. In 2025 Kruger ran day-visitor quotas from 28 June to 21 July and asked day visitors to book a time slot. Nothing had been announced for 2027 by 26 October 2026. See quotas and pre-booking before you go.
What June is like in the park
It's winter: warm days and cold nights, with almost no rain. Skukuza in Kruger averages a high of 27 °C and a low of 6 °C in June, with about 10 mm of rain. The bush thins out and the animals gather at the waterholes and rivers, so they're much easier to see than in summer. The mopane leaves start to turn yellow. Dress in layers, because it's cold at the gate at 06:00 and warm by midday.
When to leave Marloth
Crocodile Bridge is about 20-30 min from Marloth Park. Leave by 05:30 to be at the gate when it opens at 06:00, and from 26 June, with schools out, aim to be there right at opening.
For the drive out, Lower Sabie is 34 km from the gate. At the 30 km/h average to plan on, that's a little over an hour, so leave Lower Sabie by 16:15 to be through Crocodile Bridge before 17:30.
A South African adult pays R140 a day until 31 October 2027. See Kruger fees for the other rates.
Other months: May, July or the whole year.
