What is Marloth Park?

A holiday and residential town of about 3,000 ha on the south bank of the Crocodile River in Mpumalanga. Kruger National Park is on the other bank, and wild animals live between the houses. More about Marloth Park.

Is Marloth Park inside Kruger?

No. It's across the Crocodile River from Kruger, and Crocodile Bridge gate is 15-20 km away. Is Marloth Park in Kruger?

Is Marloth Park fenced?

Not between the houses. The animals wander freely from stand to stand, and the by-laws don't allow high fences or walls around a stand. A low wooden fence around a small area, such as a pool, is fine. Lionspruit, the game reserve where the lion and buffalo are kept, is fenced, and a veterinary fence runs between Marloth and Kruger along the river.

Can I bring my dog?

No. The by-laws ban pets of any kind in Marloth Park, guests' pets included, and there are signs saying so at the gates. Pets can carry diseases to the wild animals. The fine is R7,000 per pet, so book kennels or a pet sitter at home.

Can I feed the animals?

Only antelope pellets (and wild bird seed for the birds), and never by hand. Bread, mealies and leftovers make the animals ill. Never feed baboons or monkeys. The rules explain why.

Are there elephants in Marloth Park?

Not in Marloth itself. Elephants live across the river in Kruger, and you can often watch them from the river roads and from houses that face the river.

Are there lions in Marloth Park?

Lions are kept in Lionspruit, the fenced reserve inside Marloth. Now and then a lion crosses from Kruger into the rest of Marloth. If you see one, get indoors or into your car and tell your host, so the municipal rangers can be called. Wildlife in Marloth has more.

What is the speed limit?

50 km/h on Olifant Road and 30 km/h everywhere else. Animals step onto the road without warning, especially at night.

Do I need a 4x4?

Usually not. Olifant Road and the Tenbosch road in from the N4 are tar. Many side roads are gravel, and most are fine in an ordinary car, though some get bumpy after summer rain. Ask your host whether a sedan gets to the house easily. Some tracks in Lionspruit need high clearance or a 4x4.

Can I walk around Marloth Park?

Yes, in daylight. The animals are wild, so give them space. Don't walk or cycle on the roads after dark: you can't see the animals, and lions sometimes come in from Kruger.
